The Mining and Metallurgy in Chongqing University, founded as early as 1935, is one of the earliest mining and metallurgy disciplines in national colleges and universities. In 1953, Mining Engineering was created after national adjustment. The discipline is to dedicate   serving coal industry since then, and conducting scientific researches in mine gas disaster prevention and control, developing its own unique and systematic control theory and method in multiple areas including but not limited to outburst mechanism of coal and rock, gas. In 1978, the institute of engineering physics in mine engineering was established to conduct fundamental researches in coal mining engineering and applications. 

    In 2000, the state-of-art key lab, Southwest Resource Exploitation and Environmental Disaster Control Engineering, was accredited by the Ministry of Education (MOE). In 2007, Mining Engineering in Chongqing University was accredited as a national key discipline. Funded by “Projects 211" and "Projects 985" on the national science and technology innovation platform, a strong team was built, dedicating in related crucial scientific and technologic researches. 

    In addition to initial three primary research fields in the key laboratory of MOE, mineral resources exploitation and utilization engineering, geological disaster control and safety engineering, and environmental pollution control and recycling, four emerging research fields were further added and developed. Depending on the innovative achievements in the advanced research of basic theory in Mining Engineering, the key laboratory of MOE has become an important national base to cultivate high-level talents in the field of coal mine disaster dynamics and control.

    The Key Lab of Coal Mine Disaster Dynamics and Control was accredited by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2011. There are60 official researchers with different titles, including 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 award winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 4 scholars of Cheung Kong, 2 chief scientists of 973 projects, 1 winner of the millions candidates from New Century Talents Project, 7 excellent talents of the Ministry of Education in new century, 32 professors, 12 associate professors.56 of them hold PhD degree and 24 of them are under 45 years old.
